Phuket, Thailand off-grid Eco-friendly Villa water procedure

As it pertains to living off the grid on Phuket, or anywhere else in Thailand or the entire world, having an abundant way to obtain clean, drinking water is a premier priority.

For people living on the grid, quenching their thirst or taking a refreshing shower can be as simple as turning on a tap but when you're considering trying out an off-grid lifestyle, sourcing and using water becomes a more involved process.

In this article, we go over what that involved process looks like to greatly help people looking to live off the grid, and work out how best to locate, store, and use water.

Where to Find Water Off The Grid On Phuket

There are many sources of water off the grid than many individuals realize. Wells are the most obvious answer, but there are several other ways to source water sustainably.

Phuket Island Well Water

1. Maximum depth at 150 meters.
2. Full built with a pump control set and a water meter
3. GPS positioning record
4. Drilling permission and a usage license implementation

Wells are by far the most common supply of off-grid water. People have already been using well water since the dawn of civilization and with good reason. Artesian wells provide a constant source of freshwater.

The largest downside to wells is their cost. The typical well runs about $5,500 and is about 150 feet deep. As the depth of your well increases, so does your cost. The good news is when you complete your well, it gives a way to obtain water with very little required maintenance.

The water table determines the depth of one's well in your area. In wetter areas, the water table might be as shallow as 100 feet below the surface. In desert climates and other arid lands, you could have to go as deep as 1,000 feet.

If you're seriously considering using a water well on your own property – and that you don't know the place to start – our comprehensive piece on everything you need to understand about wells and well water is a great place to start.

Having the water out of your well needs a pump. You can go old school with a manual water pump or choose one of many excellent solar powered or traditional electric water pumps.

One last consideration is seismic and drilling activity near you. A good-sized earthquake can destroy your well shaft, as can activities such as for example hydraulic fracking.

Consider the fee vs. lifespan benefits when deciding in case a well is for you.

Phuket Springs

One of the greatest techniques for getting water is by way of a natural spring. A simple way to think about springs is really as natural wells. They're points where groundwater moves through cracks and fissures in the Earth around the surface.

Springs set you back nothing and provides plenty of water depending on their size. It's easy to tap into this water with just a few pipes and a method to divert the water into storage.

Here is a great explanation of the mandatory steps:

The largest downside to natural springs is their rarity. Most plots of off-grid land you find won't have a spring flowing on them. Those who do will undoubtedly be noticeably more costly than their neighbors.

Springs will also be vunerable to environmental factors. If you have an exceedingly hot or dry year, many springs will cease flowing until conditions improve.

Phuket Rain Water (Rainy season only)

One potential source for finding water off-grid is rainfall. It's free and easy to get water if your home is in an environment with adequate moisture. Better still, rainwater could be one of the cleanest, naturally occurring sources you'll find.

A simple rain catchment system can divert water from your roof to a storage system. Figuring out simply how much you can capture over annually is equally easy.

Every square foot of roof space captures .623 gallons of water for an inch of rainfall. Figure out the square footage of one's roof and look up your neighborhood rainfall statistics.

Even a small home with just 200 square feet of roof space will provide you with nearly 125 gallons of freshwater per inch of rainfall.

Natural Phuket Island Rivers, Streams, and Ponds

People have been using naturally flowing water virtually forever. Many prospective off-grid dwellers wonder why they can't merely use water present in natural springs, streams, ponds, and rivers on their property.

Unfortunately, there are many excellent arguments against relying on this supply of water. First and foremost, it's illegal in a lot of the United States and the remaining world.

Western states rely on something called Appropriative Water Rights to ascertain who will use the naturally present water.

Without going into the legalistic details, most property owners out west don't own the rights to water present on the land. In the event that you draw water from the river or other naturally occurring source, you can be fined.

Realistically it's unlikely you'd be caught or punished for drawing out a few hundred gallons per year. However, I don't recommend you break the law to truly get your water.

Phuket Island Off Grid Running Water

Two main systems allow running water while off-grid. The initial, gravity-fed storage, has been useful for millennia and relies on the force of gravity to push water through your pipes.

So long as your water tank are at an increased elevation than your house, the water will naturally undertake your pipes. Municipal water towers rely with this same system to provide water pressure to grid-tied homes.

The advantages of this system are apparent, but there are some downsides. First, you have to get the water to that elevation. If you have a rain catchment system or a well-located above your home, this may happen naturally. Otherwise, you're going to have to pump water into a storage tank mechanically.

The other method for establishing running water is a powered pump. Solar electric well pumps (I suggest the Shurflo 288) are more than effective at providing pressurized water to an off-grid home. You may get pumps with any gallon per minute flow rate that you need. They let you feel high water pressure but do require a constant draw of power.
